How do you furnish a classroom or a training room?

Tablet-arm chairs, group tables or folding tables on castors: which furniture fits the way you teach, how to keep circulation clear and where to store the pieces, with a real campus as an example.

The short answer

Decide by the way you teach, not by the catalogue. If teaching is front-facing and the room is always used the same way, tablet-arm chairs or desks in rows: it seats the most people. If people work in groups, trapezoid or rectangular tables that join into islands. And if the same room is a classroom in the morning, a training room in the afternoon and an event space on Friday, folding tables on castors with brakes that store on edge. That's how the university campus furnished by LuxaLine solved it: flexible classrooms with folding tables on castors and traditional classrooms with tablet-arm desks. Add a table for the presenter, aisles to move between rows and somewhere to store what folds away.

Three ways to teach, three layouts

  • If the room is used for one thing only: fixed rows; don't pay for mobility nobody will use.
  • If it changes use at least once a week: everything on castors with brakes, and somewhere to store.
  • If they're preschool children: a different table and chair scale; see the children's furniture.
  • If it's an auditorium with fixed seating: that's a different project; the guide on outfitting an auditorium has the seating calculator.

The real case: a campus with both kinds of classroom

The delivery of the university campus in El Salvador included a library with shelving and study tables, a computer lab, flexible classrooms with folding tables on castors and traditional classrooms with tablet-arm desks. It's a good decision model: not every classroom has to be flexible. The ones used for front-facing teaching keep tablet arms, which seat more students per room; the ones that get reconfigured have tables that fold and move. One furniture language ties both together.

Folding tables on castors: what to check

  • Brakes on the castors: a table that slides while someone writes is a table nobody wants to use.
  • Vertical folding to store on edge: the Dubai Rectangular measures 120 × 60 × 75 cm, folds vertically and has a 25 mm top.
  • The same height on every table that will be joined: otherwise the island ends up with a step.
  • A table for the presenter: the Palermo adjusts its height from 73.5 to 108 cm and has castors, so it works sitting or standing.

Circulation, sightlines and storage

Before counting seats, draw three things on the plan. Aisles: someone must be able to pass between rows without the others standing up, and at least one route must stay clear for a wheelchair user. Sightlines: every seat has to see the board and screen without turning the chair further than is comfortable, and no window should sit behind the screen. And storage: a flexible room needs a storeroom or a clear wall where folded tables stand on edge; if there's nowhere to put them, the room stays set up forever.

For the floor, see what stands up to tables and chairs being dragged in the guide on heavy-traffic floors, and for room echo, the one on office noise.

Common mistakes

  • Fixed desks in a multipurpose room

If the space changes use every week, fixed pieces mean moving everything by hand. Choose castors and folding.

  • Tables on castors with no brakes

They slide while people write. Check the spec sheet says castors with brakes.

  • No plan for storage

Folding tables need a storeroom or a clear wall. Without it, the room never gets reconfigured.

  • Mixing table heights

Islands end up with a step and the surface is useless for group work. Buy the same line.

Frequently asked questions

Which tables work for group work?

Trapezoid or rectangular tables of the same height that join into islands with no step. In the catalogue, the Dubai Trapezoid has castors with brakes and stacks vertically to reconfigure the room.

How do I set up a flexible classroom?

With folding tables on castors with brakes, chairs that move easily, an adjustable presenter's table and somewhere to store what folds. Draw the layouts you'll use on the plan before buying.
